TERRAIN: Exploring the language of landscape
Jenny Bloomfield, Christel Dillbohner, Danae Mattes
February 11 – April 1, 2012
Opening Reception: Saturday, February 11, 5:30-7:30pm
Program @ 7pm on February 11
James Linnehan, visual researcher, reads an excerpt from W.G. Sebald's prose poem After Nature, followed by a performance by Monica Scott on cello, of spontanous composition #4
In these stirring abstract process paintings, Jenny Bloomfield, Christel Dillbohner and Danae Mattes present landscape-inspired work that mines the place where materials shift and change, and horizons form and dissolve. TERRAIN offers meditations on nature through visual explorations of an inherent language and relationship to the earth that is at once mysterious and sublime.

YELLING CLINIC: Artists Impacted by Disability and War
April 14 – June 3, 2012
Yelling Clinic is an artist collaborative group that includes UC Berkeley professor Katherine Sherwood, Ehren Tool, Sunaura Taylor, Chau Thuy Huynh and David Wallace. Its members are individuals who have direct experience with disability and war and explore artmaking as a way to mutually engage people who are often spoken about but rarely are given their own voices. What makes this group additionally unique is their interest in exploring the healing process in a manner that is informed and empowering, as opposed to the current societal views surrounding issues of “art & healing” which tends to be patronizing to the disabled community, placing the disabled in a medical framework. Berkeley Art Center will offer workshops for veterans with disabilities, and appeal to the wider audience of disabled citizens in and around Berkeley through concurrent programming. This exhibition and its related programs will encourage a unique dialogue in the community around the disabled and the arts, through the lens of wartime experience and how this experience affects culture and the identities of its disabled. Work created for this exhibition will be deeply influenced by the artists’ collaborative’s upcoming grant-supported research trip to Vietnam in early 2012.
