Fall Artist Lecture Series: Tom Marioni

As founder and director of the Museum of Conceptual Art in San Francisco, Marioni created a community for artists to which we now look with  a perspective which provides an historical framework for Bay Area performance, sound, and conceptual art. Tom will discuss his sculpture, his writings, including his books, Beer, Art and Philosophy, 2003  and Fabliaux, 2009, and share his insight into the very nature of the art of these times.

Visual Thinking Strategies
Sunday, October 18, 2-5pm

Berkeley Art Center is pleased to partner with Visual Thinking Strategies to offer this dynamic experience in adult art education to our members. Deepen your connection to art through one of the most respected art education methods in the country through the VTS facilitation method created by noted educator Philip Yenawine. Tour the gallery and participate in a group dialogue about works on view. Additionally, a few of the artists in the exhibition will be present to talk about their work.

Metaphysical Abstraction: Artists Talk with introduction/lecture by Dr. Mark Levy
Thursday, October 29, 7pm

Join Director Suzanne Tan and Guest Curators Jamie Brunson & Michelle Mansour for a discussion of the exhibition Metaphysical Abstraction: Contemporary Approaches to Spiritual Content. The evening will feature several artists from the exhibition talking about their work, as well as a presentation by Mark Levy, Senior Art Historian at California State University, East Bay. Dr. Levy, author of The Void in Art, will provide a philosophical introduction to the topic of spiritual content in art.

Los Angeles painter, Martin Lubner, is often referred to as a “Painter's Painter”. A generous and insightful teacher, Lubner has guided generations of painters from UCLA, the Royal College of Art in London, and the wide pools of Los Angeles painters who have sought his wisdom.  Lubner's paintings engage in a universal dialogue of contemporary life and humanistic traditions.

Featuring a screening of With My Back to the World (57 minutes, 2002), a documentary film on painter Agnes Martin.

Join us for a last look at Metaphysical Abstraction: Contemporary Approaches to Spiritual Content and a screening of the groundbreaking documentary film about Agnes Martin, With My Back to the World. In this film, the late artist speaks about her work, her chosen life of solitude, and her views of the creative process.

Kara Maria occupies a place apart. Her paintings draw from the current issues of our day: the devastating condition of the environment, the ongoing state of war, and the ever confounding aspects of sexual exploitation. Fluent in the languages of figuration and absraction, Kara’s impassioned view of this world is reflected in public collections including the di Rosa Preserve, the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University, and the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno.
