JURIED @ BAC, the Berkeley Art Center’s Annual National Juried Exhibition, now in its 25th year, has earned a reputation as a prestigious national competition. The exhibition draws the attention of collectors, museum directors, curators and media outlets. It appears in Bay Area newspapers, publications, and gallery listings, and it is generally considered a resource for curators and dealers seeking emerging artists.
Jurors will determine the distribution of the cash prize and the winner(s) will be announced at the opening reception.
Since 1983, JURIED @ BAC has attracted artists from across the country. Our respected jurors have contributed greatly to its prestige, as has the BAC’s commitment to developing and inspiring artist’s work. Past jurors have included: Gary Garrells, Chief Curator at the UCLA Hammer Art Museum, UCLA, and former Chief Curator at MoMA New York; Sandra Phillips, Curator of Photography, SFMoMA and Enrique Chagoya, artist.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
This year, JURIED @ BAC is devoted to Painting, Sculpture and Mixed Media. A separate call for entries will appear in early 2009 for Works on Paper.
Eligibile Artists
All artists are welcome to submit entries for original artwork, executed within the past four years.
Submission Requirement
Jurors will review submissions from slides or digital images (.jpeg only.) Individual submissions must consist of either slides or digital images. Individual entries combining slides and digital images will not be accepted.
Eligible media
Painting (includes: oil, acrylic, gouache, watercolor, etc.), sculpture in any material, and mixed media work in any medium.
Image Specifications
BAC reserves the right to reject accepted entries, if the work does not contain the same qualities as indicated in submitted images (slides and digital pictures.) Images of accepted works will be retained by BAC. Images of declined works will be returned with the Jury Notification. Each artist may submit up to 5 entries (one entry equals one work of art). BAC assumes no responsibility for slides or CDs that may be lost in transit.
Digital images: must be submitted as .jpegs on CDs labeled as below. Each file should be titled with artist’s last name and title of work, followed by “.jpeg.”
Slides: must be 2” x 2” (35 mm) cardboard or plastic mounted (no glass.) Please indicate “top” and submit in plastic slide sheets.

Each slide and CD must be labeled with:
• artist’s name
• title of work
• medium
• size
Fees
$10 per image, 2 image min. ($20.00), 5 image max. ($50.00).
Entrants submitting 5 slides are automatically eligible for one year’s membership to BAC. NOTE: Current BAC Artist Members do not pay the entry fee.
Artwork Requirements
Entries must be for original artwork, executed within the past four years. Work may not exceed a perimeter measurement of 270 inches INCLUDING THE FRAME. To find the perimeter measurement, add the dimensions of all four sides of the piece.
All work must be received by BAC suitably framed and ready for hanging. The artist is responsible for adhering to all deadlines and schedules, and for all freight both to and from BAC. Work should be packed in reusable containers and BAC accepts no responsibility for work not retrieved by the deadline. No work may be stored at BAC.
Liability and Insurance
The Berkeley Art Center is not responsible for the insurance of works during shipping. All work will be insured while on the BAC premises.
Jurors
Catharine Clark, of San Francisco’s Catharine Clark Gallery has presented the work of local, national and international emerging and mid-career contemporary artists since 1991. Clark holds a B.A. in Art History from the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to opening her own gallery, she worked for Henry S. McNeil Gallery in Philadelphia, specializing in contemporary American art, and as the curator of works on paper for a gallery in San Francisco, specializing in original prints from the 16th through early 20th century. From 1999 to 2003 she taught graduate level courses at the San Francisco Art Institute and regularly continues to lecture at other institutions, including California College of Arts (CCA) and Stanford University.
JoAnne Northrop has served as the San Jose Museum of Art’s Senior Curator since 2001. She has curated numerous exhibitions that fuse popular culture and contemporary art, including Un/Familiar Territory; Domestic Odyssey;
Girl Power! Laurie Long; Heavenly Bodies; and Jennifer Steinkamp. Formerly of the de Saisset Museum, Santa Clara University, and the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, CA, Northrup earned her Master’s Degree in Art History/Museum Studies from the University of Southern California, and her
Bachelor’s Degree in Art History from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

If you join or renew at the Artist Member level by June 11, 2008, you can submit up to 5 images for no fee. You will also receive one year of benefits, including:
