For its 2023 Juried Members Exhibition, the Berkeley Art Center invites artists living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area to submit works in any media. Art works of any theme will be considered. Applications are due March 22, 2023 at 10:59PM PT/11:59PM MT.

Hoi Leung, Deputy Director, Chinese Culture Center

About the Juror

HOI LEUNG is the Deputy Director of the Chinese Culture Center, overseeing the internal culture, programs and operations of the organization. Leung was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to the US in 2004. Previously, Leung was the Curator at CCC for 4 years, where she established a distinct practice specializing in Asian diasporic contemporary art, developing emerging artists, and designing community engagement in immigrant neighborhood settings. Leung’s curatorial projects included “dawn_chorusiii: the fruit they don’t have here” by Sofia Cordova (2019 - 2021), an experimental video foregrounding the stories of six Bay Area women who journeyed to the United States as refugees, and “Interior Garden” (2022), a major solo exhibition of large-scale ceramic-based installations by Cathy Lu exploring the dream and dystopian states Asian America. Leung’s projects have received critical acclaim in KQED, Hyperallergic, Artforum, Artsy, and SF Arts Monthly. She was also named one of five new game-changing curators by SF Arts Monthly in 2021. Leung an emerging leader in the field as she devotes her unique background in artist support and community curation into building a healthy, sustainable, and imaginative arts ecosystem.

 

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Recent artworks in all media are welcome.

  • A short artist statement or project statement is required.

  • In order to accommodate and appropriately present all submitted work, the show will be an exhibition of “small works” with a size limit of 30 inches in any direction, including frames. Out of fairness to other exhibiting artists, BAC will refuse entries that exceed size limits.

  • Freestanding sculpture may be up to 48 inches tall and no more than 24 inches in any other dimension. BAC will provide pedestals.

  • No artwork will be accepted without a fully completed submission form. The submission form deadline is March 22, 2022, at 10:59 PM PT/11:59PM MT.

  • Works must be ready to hang, dry, and framed where appropriate. Pieces with special hanging requirements should include hardware and a clear, typed set of instructions, where appropriate.

  • Artists must provide all necessary equipment with regard to sound and video works.

  • Work must have the artist's name clearly written on back unless the nature of the work makes it impossible to do so.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Applicant must be a current member. Artist memberships are $15-55 sliding scale. Click here to renew or join. Please email us if you have request a membership scholarship.

  • Only greater Northern California Bay Area residents may submit. Sorry, we cannot pay for shipping.

  • Current students are encouraged to apply.

  • Collaboratives and collectives are encouraged to apply.

RULES AND TERMS TO APPLY

  • Artist agrees not to remove exhibited piece until the end of the exhibition.

  • Berkeley Art Center will provide full insurance for the stated value of each artwork.

  • Artist will label on the back of the work the artist’s name, title of work, medium, and indicate “top” where appropriate.

  • Sale of exhibited work will be conducted through BAC and all applicable sales tax will be charged. BAC requires a 30% donation/commission of the sale price from the lender. Lender will receive their portion by check upon the close of the exhibition. Artist will indicate if works are not for sale, and indicate a value for insurance purposes.

  • Artist agrees to allow BAC to use photographic reproductions of work to document and promote the exhibition.

  • Artist agrees to loan work ready-to-hang.

  • Artist (or designated representative) agrees to pick up work or de-install from BAC on July 29 at 5pm.

  • Artist acknowledges that work left beyond 90 days may be discarded.
