Kimberley D'Adamo Green

The child of a neuroscientist, D'Adamo grew up fascinated with biology, complex systems and the relationship between images and learning. She studied philosophy and the history of science at St. John's College in Maryland.  She finished her BA in Visual Art and Philosophy at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, graduating with honors. She has an MA in Art Education from SFSU and has won numerous awards as both a teacher and a painter. D'Adamo exhibits regularly in the Bay Area, including the Oakland Museum Off-site Exhibitions, and most recently in the David Brower Center in Berkeley and with Chandra Cerrito Gallery Off-site Exhibitions in Downtown Oakland. Her upcoming exhibition "Particulate", in collaboration with Dr. Jim Hobbs of UC Davis Department of Fisheries, examines the restoration of the South Bay Salt Ponds and will be on display at the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center Art Gallery in April, 2018.

Artist Statement

How have optical technologies- microscopes, satellite imagery, drone video- shifted our awareness of scale and space, and our understanding of who we are in relationship to the natural world? Scale is contextual-under the lens, cells are a landscape, earth is a cell.  We can now see the impact of our actions on the world, down to the particulate level. In my paintings, I shift the plane of the canvas to represent overlooked surfaces, capturing a sense of looking down from above. My process involves working directly with scientists, gathering specimens to examine under the microscope, viewing ariel images and deep research into the landscape of each painting. Using water-based media and building materials such as silicone and drywall paste, I re-examine expressionist painting through contemporary ways of viewing biological forms and wetland ecosystems.
