David Becker

David Becker lives and works in Oakland, CA. His artistic training began at California College of Art and Craft and took him to Central School of Art, Holborn, London and the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program in New York. Working with color fields juxtaposed by graphic elements, his paintings exercise the optic response but also curb the energy around us and enable the viewer to refocus and contemplate the iconic use of negative space.

Artist Statement

The moment or process in the work of painting demands a singularity of focus. From that develops a fresh clarity, inspiration and curiosity and, if nothing else, the desire to see through from the initial impetus the path that was set to final completion.

The work encompasses pictorial Image and Ground. The Image: Iconic, Sculpture, Architectural. An object or an empty (negative) space, abstract or referential, proportional, isotropic, and focused. In contrast to Ground: asymmetrical cacophonic racket of spatial dissonance equal in contrast to Image. Within this I am able to explore and address a desired subject matter, as well as engage in Painting and the path it’s put me on.
