Artist Statement

[excerpt]

In working with an abstracted version of nature, my references to the natural world are reductive and formal. I've spent the last five years experimenting with depictions of currents, wave patterns, and shapes in water illuminated by varying densities of light. I have the pleasure of seeing this play out on the San Francisco Bay every day as I travel the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge on the way to and from my studio. The play of light on water and courses of movement in water are real, observed phenomenon that I work from, but they're also metaphors for the fluid and ephemeral qualities of life.
